This paper offers a foundation for students learning to navigate and communicate effectively through digital learning environments. It incorporates purposeful selection of technologies for learning, and digital literacy which includes being able to research, create, evaluate and apply technical skills while doing so.

This paper is taught over a 12-week trimester between Monday, 7 March and Friday, 10 June 2022, and is divided into three modules:

Module One – Digital fluency and me

Module Two – Multi-literacies

Module Three – Citizenship rights and responsibilities

There will be no teaching during Easter and Teaching Recess (Friday, 15 April - Friday, 29 April), or on Queen'sBirthday (Monday, 6 June).

This paper is fully online, with all teaching in Moodle via panopto, discussion forums and individual/group feedback. Additional sessions will be offered via Zoom and/or GoogleMeet. Students are also invited to request appointments via phone or Zoom (or in person where a student is on campus).

Students will need regular and reliable access to the Internet and a computer, for daily access to the class where possible. It is advisable to have a back-up plan for access if the primary connection/computer fails at any stage in the trimester.

The paper convenor will reply to all Moodle communications within 12-24 hours during weekdays, and is an active participant in all class discussions.

This paper has a credit value of 15 points. This paper at 100 level, is expected to take a total of 150 hours to complete. The time spent will include:

  • Participating regularly in discussion within the Moodle forum
  • Reading through the online modules, discussions and resources
  • Finding and reading related information
  • Thinking, reflecting, discussing
  • Preparing responses to questions in the modules
  • Seeking help from resources and others in the class
  • Improving digital skills generally.
